FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I get my Personal Track Safety (PTS) certificate?
Firstly you should have a sponsor; this is usually the company that you will be working for who pays you. You must have a sponsor to be able to join the rail industry. If you have not got a sponsor yet but still want to be trained then please contact a member of our staff to discuss the options on +44 7921153716.
Must I be tested for drugs and alcohol and medical fitness?
Yes, and this must be done before you attend a training session with us. You must bring your certificates with you or arrange for a good copy to be sent here. Obviously the results must be negative for drugs/alcohol.
Can my local Doctor/ G.P do my test?
No unfortunately your local doctor cannot do the medical and D&A test. As it is a mandatory requirement for the rail industry, only railway approved medical centres are qualified to carry out the screening tests. If you would like to be tested at our centre, please call our bookings team on +44 7921153716 for an appointment.
How much is a Medical and D&A?
Medical and D&A £140.00 + VAT
Medical Only £90.00 + VAT
D&A Only £90.00 + VAT
Can I do the Medical and D&A after the course?
No, you must have passed the tests and we need to see the certificates before you sit a course. It’s a mandatory requirement that we can see you are medically fit before we take you onto a railway line, which is part of the training.

You can register on a forthcoming training event by either using our online booking calendar or by calling +44 7921153716, or by e-mailing on info@railwayconsult.co.uk
How often do you run PTS courses?
If you look at the ‘Calender’ link from our home page you will see that we run PTS initial and PTS re-certification courses most weeks. Please note, your space will only be confirmed after we have received all the relevant paperwork including your booking form signed by your sponsor and full payment.
What is the duration of a PTS initial course?
PTS initial course duration is only 2 days long. However if your job requires you to work on the railway line itself and affect the geometry as a track man, then you will probably need the additional training of Track Induction.
What is Track Induction and how long is the course?
The Track Induction course is a ten-day training event, which includes the PTS if not already completed. It includes; Company Induction, First Aid, Manual Handling, Fire Safety Awareness, Track Formation and Drainage, Construction and Components, Geometry, Tools and Equipment, Maintenance , Off Track and Vegetation, Extremes of Weather. Also there are lots of practical demonstrations and sessions included in this course at our practical training site.

If you do not already have a sentinel card with an up to date medical then bring yourmedical certificate. If you have had a new medical and D&Ascreen please bring that as well. We will need to see your current sentinel card if you have one. If the course involves a practical session then you will be provided with basic personnel protective equipment. If you are attending a re-cert course then any rulebooks and hand book modules that are relevant, and your completed logbook will be required.
What is PPE?
Personnel Protective Equipment. Railway workers must wear Orange high visibility clothing including trousers and top. Do you deliver Traffic Marshal or health and safety training to any industry?
We work with organisations and companies in the public and private sectors and have particular expertise in delivering health and safety courses to local authorities and the construction industry. We have been working closely with construction and security companies in particular to deliver Traffic Marshall or Traffic Banksman, First Aid, Fire Safety, Manual Handling, Level 1 Health & Safety on a construction Environment courses to fit the purpose of security and general labour operatives on construction sites. However, we can work with any sector to train both those who are new to health and safety requirements as well as those who require refresher training..
Why do we need Traffic Marshal or Traffic Banksman training?
Traffic Banksman training helps to reduce the high number of incidents involving workers being struck by a moving vehicle. Over half of all accidents of this type occur while a vehicle is reversing. Reversing vehicles can also cause costly damage to vehicles, equipment and premises.
How can Traffic Marshal/ Banksman benefit individuals?
Traffic Marshal training is essential for individuals whose jobs involve directing vehicles visiting a worksite, or for those looking to further their careers in this area. It will help you to demonstrate that you understand how to clearly communication safety information to drivers and pedestrians
How can Traffic Marshal/ Banksman training benefit our organisation?
Traffic Marshal training can deliver a number of benefits to organisations. As well as helping to reduce costly accidents and meet the HSE requirements for Banksman staff, it can help reduce wasted time during loading and unloading periods. It presents the right image to clients and other visitors to your organisation. And it is ideal for organisations that want to invest in the professional development of staff. Since training for Traffic Marshals is now a requirement set out by the HSE it can also help lead to new and continuing contracts.
Who should attend the Traffic Marshal/ Banksman training course?
If you employ banksmen or other staff to direct the manoeuvring, loading and unloading of vehicles, then the HSE requires that they are properly trained. Staff must have a good understanding of how to signal and communicate information to drivers entering, reversing, manoeuvring or leaving your premises.
What is the difference between Traffic Banksman and Slinger Banksman?
The Traffic Banksman is sometimes referred to as Traffic Marshal or Vehicle Banksman. The role covers responsibility for supervising vehicles and pedestrians safely on a site while vehicles are moving. The CPCS Slinger Banksman is responsible for slinging and signalling during the movement of loads while using heavy lifting equipment such as cranes.
How can I be sure the training I’ll receive meets the required standards?
Our courses are carefully deigned to adhere to the standards mandated by the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the European Resuscitation Council (ERC), the UK Resuscitation Council, and the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) through Pro Training. All courses are fully accredited and result in a nationally recognised qualification. We go beyond the required standard to offer additional value to our learners and clients.
How do you go beyond the requirements to add value?
For example, we deliver our First Aid courses to cover all the mandatory units required by the Health and Safety Exertive as well as bolt on units like the Automate External Defibrillator. That way we can offer additional value to our learners and their employers.
How are courses delivered?
Our courses are taught using the most up to date study material to ensure we cover all aspects of the required qualification. We use online technologies and videos to deliver learning. Some materials can be accessed after the course has ended so you can still benefit from the teaching post learning. Materials draw on pedagogical techniques to ensure learners are able to absorb and understand what’s delivered, and then to apply it where it matters on the job. We only use qualified trainers to deliver courses. Our trainers understand the sector, are competent and will use real life experiences where possible to enhance learning.
Are your courses suitable for anyone?
Our courses are designed to improve employability skills and so are suitable for anyone who wants to develop their career opportunities through health and safety training. They are designed to help people advance their careers or get back into work quickly.
Is there any additional support offered?
Every student has access to guidance and help from our dedicated, professional and multilingual support team. Oral tests are also available to ensure that candidates with learning difficulties or disabilities can also access the training and achieve success.
Where are courses delivered?
We offer the flexibility to have courses delivered at any site, including your workplace (providing there is a suitable classroom type space for the theory), at our own premises or at another selected local venue. In order to have training delivered at your site we need a minimum of 6 delegates to attend and outside space suitable to reverse a vehicle.
Are there plans to integrate the ICI with CSCS?
There are no plans to use CSCS or incorporate into the ICI; both competencies are to be kept separate. The ICI assessment requires the individual to prove competence rather than simply recalling what was learnt from the induction.
How does an individual prove they've completed the assessment and have been assessed competent?
Once the individual is confident with the material, their Sponsor can apply for them to take the Competence Assessment at an RTAS-accredited training centre. If they pass, the ICI competence will be recorded on their Sentinel record. The individual can use their smartcard on site to prove ICI competence.
How often will the competence need to be re-assessed?
The ICI competence will need to be re-certified every 60 months. This has been validated in line with the new assurance regimes being implemented from June 2014.
How can I obtain a Sponsor's log-in and passwords for individuals to start using the ICI e-learning tool?
See ICI Flow chart
Is there a classroom version of the e-learning available?
No. In order to maintain consistency the e-learning package provides the individual with all the information and training required before taking the assessment.
How does a company become registered to deliver the Competence Assessment?
See Assessment Centre Support page
Is there any guidance for Site Managers to produce and give site-specific inductions to those individuals who've proven ICI competence?
See Site Manager Support page
If an individual has the PTS competence is there a requirement for the ICI?
Yes. Both courses have been designed to reduce the amount of overlap in content. The ICI is different from PTS. ICI is a general induction for CDM-style works. It is to be an entry-level qualification that can be held without PTS, as long as an individual is not required to go trackside. It is possible that some people will need to hold both competences.
Why does Network Rail not mandate the use of the ICI and proof of competence for all construction sites on the infrastructure?
There are no current plans by Network Rail to make the ICI competence mandatory. The ICI has been created for the industry and as such Network Rail would expect all Principal Contractors working on or around the rail infrastructure to adopt it.
Do the same obligations of Primary and Sub-Sponsorship (including, for example, primary sponsors providing PPE when the individual is working on a sub-sponsors site and the fatigue management arrangements) apply to someone who has ICI as they would for PTS?
Yes, the Sentinel Scheme Rules apply to all individuals holding a Sentinel card and to all Sponsors, however there are certain exceptions for Sponsors who are Non Trackside Sponsors and who do not put individuals to work trackside (see Trackside Sponsor Rules on the Sponsor Support Page).
What is the cost for the ICI, Assessment and providing a Smartcard to an individual?
The ICI e-learning induction is free of charge. Assessment Centres will make a charge per assessment undertaken. There is not a set charge for this, and each Assessment Centre will set their own rate, but we would expect the cost to be around £15-20 per head. Sentiel smartcards for ICI will cost £22.50, which is the same as the cost of a normal smartcard There is no charge specifically to register on Sentinel, as the cost model is based on the number of people you sponsor. However, you will need to pay to be registered with Link up.
How do I get myself registered so I can sponsor my staff and get them trained on the ICI competency?
If a business only requires ICI competency staff, it would only need to register and complete the non-trackside declaration. There is a random audit involved – which is a percentage sample to test compliance (this audit cost is included in the fee for the declaration). There is no need to do an IMR audit or such like, which is contrary to the reason this sponsorship route was created.
Do I need Non-trackside and Trackside sponsorship registration with Achilles/RISQS?
No, if your already a trackside sponsor, you don’t need to do anything as you will be able to ‘sponsor’ delegates for the ICI training. The non-tracker process is an ‘entry point’ to use Sentinel, and allows businesses with just ICI holders to sponsor staff. If your workers need a PTS card then you will have to follow the Trackside Rules. Visit the Sentinel website for more information.
